Esta semana, durante el 12 Encuentro Internacional de Fotoperiodismo, Javier Bauluz y un grupo de fotógrafos, periodistas y distintas personalidades relacionadas con los derechos humanos, presentaron un manifiesto para luchar por que los informadores se comprometan con los derechos humanos.

Gijón, 18 de Julio de 2008
La Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos debe ser el marco ético del periodismo.
El derecho a la información es una condición fundamental para el desarrollo pleno de la democracia, así como para que los ciudadanos puedan opinar y actuar libremente.
Los periodistas y las empresas periodísticas deben contribuir a que se respeten los derechos humanos, y su labor debe poner de manifiesto todas sus violaciones.
Las nuevas tecnologías amplían las posibilidades de acceso a nuevos medios de comunicación: democratizan el derecho a informar y a ser informado, y favorecen el desarrollo del periodismo desde el enfoque de los derechos humanos.
La independencia de los periodistas es vital para la sociedad y el periodismo es un servicio público a los ciudadanos que no puede estar sometido a intereses políticos o económicos particulares.
La defensa de los Derechos Humanos es una de las tareas primordiales del periodismo y los periodistas no podrán ejercer su labor si sus propios derechos humanos son vulnerados.

Encuentro Internacional de Fotoperiodismo Ciudad de Gijón.

Acabo de volver de pasar una semana en Gijón acompañado de un importantísimo grupo de fotógrafos y periodistas de España y de todo el mundo. Se trata del 12 Encuentro Internacional de Fotoperiodismo Ciudad de Gijón que cada año organiza el premiado por el Premio Pulitzer Javier Bauluz. No sólo se trata de unas ponencias o charlas se trata de un verdadero encuentro entre fotógrafos o periodistas y aspirantes a ello. Se convive durante una semana y se disfruta de charlas, coloquios, proyecciones de fotografías, documentales, fabadas, sidras y gin tonics. Una fabulosa forma de ver la educación y el mejor camino que existe en España para entrar viendo con un teleobjetivo y salir mirando con un angular.
Pocos o ningún encuentro de fotografía en el Mundo existen con tal calidad de invitados. Este año hemos podido aprender mucho de:

Rakesh and his clasmates are taking a taxi to the school as every morning. Usually there are 6 children in one taxi (plus one teacher form New Light and the taxi driver). New Light pay the taxi every morning and send a van to pick up the children from school at the end of the morning.

Kolkata awoke 3 hours before. Now the streets are crowded. People are working, cooking, walking or doing nothing on the streets. Everybody is on the street. Rakesh and his friend walk among people to take a car to the school.

This is the alley to New Light. This is the place where the women work as prostitutes. Rakesh and his classmates take this way every day. And every day a lot of women (sometimes their mothers) are waiting for clients.

Rakesh and his friends go to the street to take a car to the school. This is the door to the upstairs to New Light. New Light installed here a free comdom vending machine. Kalighat is one of the biggest red light areas in India. A lot of men came everyday to have sex with the mothers. HIV/AIDS is one of the biggest problems here.
New Light provides awareness programs Includes counseling, intervention and rehabilitation, regular meetings with mothers regarding the danger of HIV, distribution of free condoms and home based palliative care for HIV positive patients.

This is Raja´s hand. Raja is a social worker of New Light. He wakes up very early every day to take the children to the school. They live in Kalighat. This is one of the oldest red light areas of Kolkata housing sex workers from the city, the districts and neighbouring countries like Nepal and Bangladesh.
The social workers of New Light are completely accepted by the community. They work whith the consent and colaboration of the fathers and mothers. The families know that the people of New Light love this children. And the families love the people of New Light.
The boy is one of the best friends of Rakesh. He lives in front of his house.
