This is Raja´s hand. Raja is a social worker of New Light. He wakes up very early every day to take the children to the school. They live in Kalighat. This is one of the oldest red light areas of Kolkata housing sex workers from the city, the districts and neighbouring countries like Nepal and Bangladesh.

The social workers of New Light are completely accepted by the community. They work whith the consent and colaboration of the fathers and mothers. The families know that the people of New Light love this children. And the families love the people of New Light.

The boy is one of the best friends of Rakesh. He lives in front of his house.

These are the neighbors of Rakesh’s family. The children are his classmate. They all wakes up at the same time to take a taxy to the school.

Every morning one of his friends drinks water from the hand of his father. Yesterday his father shaved the head of his son because of lice.

Rakesh get dressed in front of his mother, Krishna. He wears his school uniform with white shoes. His mother, Krishna allways walk barefoot. She born with a problem in her foot and she can´t walk and work property.

Now Rakesh is the big ray of hope in the family. With the help of New Light he can go to the school and his mother dreams with having a doctor in the family.

Rakesh eats a couple of cookies with a little chai (tea with milk) for breakfast while his mother awaits the moment to dress him with the school uniform. Krishna, his mother, is 35 years old and she born with a problem in her foot that prevents her from working normally. Nobody wants to give her a work but she gets some money doing small jobs cleaning houses nearby.

In India there is a great discrimination against women. More than 60% think that men are better political leaders than women, and 70% think that when jobs are scarce, men should have more right to a job than women.

Rakesh´s mother give him 4 rupees to buy something to have breakfast. 4 rupees are 0.1 US$ (0,06€). With those coins Rakesh will buy some cookies on the street.

In India about 35% of the population lives below 1 US$ a day.

Rakesh cleans his teeth with untreated water and with the help of an old toothbrush and a plastic container. This is the first thing he does every day when he wakes up.

In India, the world´s second most populous country, about 63% of the population live without improved sanitation facilities. Over 600 million people in rural areas live without basic sanitation.

Rakesh is privileged. He has a small house with 8 square meters for 4 people. In Calcutta, 500,000 children lives on the streets. In asia there are 100 million of children living on the streets.
