Rakesh´s mother give him 4 rupees to buy something to have breakfast. 4 rupees are 0.1 US$ (0,06€). With those coins Rakesh will buy some cookies on the street.

In India about 35% of the population lives below 1 US$ a day.

Rakesh cleans his teeth with untreated water and with the help of an old toothbrush and a plastic container. This is the first thing he does every day when he wakes up.

In India, the world´s second most populous country, about 63% of the population live without improved sanitation facilities. Over 600 million people in rural areas live without basic sanitation.

“24 Hours With Rakesh” is the story of a normal day in the life of one children of New Light, a Non Govermental Organisation (NGO) in Kolkata (India).

24 hours taking pictures of Rakesh, following the boy all the day: when he was sleeping, eating, learning at school, playing… to show how is the life of a boy in New Light.

New Light is a day care center and 24 hours shelter in the red light area of Kalighat in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata. There are some 102 children of sex workers enrolled in this center, they are provided with free fooding, education and there are some 25 of these children who permanently reside in this shelter.

The mission of New Light is to promote gender equality through education and life-skill training, thereby reduce harm caused by violence and abuse to women and young children.

"24 Horas con Rakesh" es la historia de un día normal en la vida de un niño de New Light, una organización no gubernamental (ONG) en Calcuta (India).

24 horas tomando fotografías de Rakesh, estando junto a él todo el día: mientras duerme, come, aprende en la escuela, juega… para mostrar cómo es la vida de un niño de New Light y cómo puede llegar a ser de distinto su futuro.

New Light es un centro de acogida abierto 24 horas en el distrito rojo de Kaligahat, en la ciudad india de Calcuta. Hay unos 102 niños hijos de prostitutas en el centro a los que se les proporciona comida gratis y educación. Unos 25 de ellos residen permanentemente en el centro.

La misión de New Light es promover la igualdad de sexo a través de la educación y aprendizaje vital para reducir el dolor causado por la violencia y el abuso a las mujeres y los niños.
